When Is the Best Time to Book Your Newborn Photoshoot in Dublin?

30 September 2025

One of the questions I get asked most often is: “When should we book our newborn photoshoot?”

The truth is, babies have their own timing, so there’s never one “right” answer — but there are a few tips that can help you plan ahead and make sure you get the photos you’ve been dreaming of.

Why timing matters

In the very early days, newborns are naturally sleepy and love being curled up just like they were in the womb. This makes it easier to capture those cosy, dreamy images that many parents adore. As the weeks go by, babies become more alert, stretch out more, and sometimes find it harder to settle into those classic curled poses.

That’s why most photographers (myself included) recommend booking your newborn session within the first two weeks after birth. This is when we’re most likely to get those snug, sleepy photos.

But what if my baby is older?

Life doesn’t always go to plan — and that’s absolutely fine. I don’t put an upper age limit on newborn photography. If your baby is a little older, we just adapt the session. Instead of curled-up poses, we might capture gorgeous stretches, little expressions, or even the very first smiles. The photos will still be timeless, natural, and full of love.

When should you book your session?

The best time to book is actually before your baby arrives. Many parents reserve their newborn session around the time of their 20-week scan, or at least a couple of months before their due date. That way, you know you have a space held for you, and once baby makes their arrival, we’ll set a firm date that works for you and your family.

I always keep some flexibility in my diary for early or late arrivals, because babies rarely follow the plan!

Where do sessions take place?

All of my newborn photoshoots take place at my studio in Newcastle, Co. Dublin. It’s a calm, baby-friendly space where everything is set up to make the experience as relaxing as possible for both you and your little one. Families come to me from all over Dublin, Kildare, and Wicklow, and often say the session feels like a little break — a chance to sit back while I take care of everything.

How long does a newborn session take?
Most sessions last around 1-2 hours. This gives plenty of time for feeding, soothing, and cuddles, so there’s never any rush.

Can siblings and parents be included in the photos?
Absolutely. I always encourage family images during newborn sessions. These are some of the most treasured photos, and siblings often love being part of it.

Do I need to bring anything with me?
Not much! My studio is fully set up with everything we need. A change of clothes for parents and siblings, nappies, milk/feeds, and a favourite blanket are always useful.

Is it safe for my baby?
Yes — safety is always my number one priority. I use gentle, natural posing and follow your baby’s lead. I never force them into positions that aren’t comfortable.

When should I book my newborn session?
Ideally before your baby arrives, usually around your 20-week scan, to make sure you secure a spot. If your baby is already here, get in touch — I’ll always do my best to fit you in.
